I see it as quite core...core indeed (core SRD item, core SRD special material; both from the DMG). It's just as core as adding mithril to full plate = giving you mithril full plate.I am adding...

I believe the 'standard' is to ignore all flavor text (unless it applies / contradicts with respect to game mechanics).Now...if the SRD said what you just wrote above...I might just do it differently....
